One of the only LPs ever cut as a leader by bassist Larry Ridley -- one of the hipper talents on his instrument during the 60s, emerging here as a skilled leader with a strong handle on a number of styles. The album's standout cut is the funky break version of Monk's "Well You Needn't", which has been sampled often over the years -- but the whole set's a nice blend of moods overall, with a feel that recalls some of the work of Henry Franklin on Black Jazz records. Larry plays both acoustic and electric bass, and he's joined by Sonny Fortune, Cornell Dupree, and Grady Tate. Titles include "Changa Chikuyo", "Indiana Avenue", and "Never Can Say Goodbye".
